Lego and Colorforms: Creative Monster Toys

I always liked toys that you could be creative with. One example from last month would be the Flintstones Shaker Maker.

As for Halloween and monster toys, I Had a few creative toys. When thinking monsters, the first one that comes to mind is the Mighty Men and Monster Maker mad by Tomy in the 70's and 80's.

This toy enabled you to easily create pictures of monsters or super heroes. You would mix and match plastic plates that you then could put paper over and make a rubbing with colored pencil to reveal the raised portions from the plates. There were heads, torsos, and legs that all lined up so you could make the complete monster or make a silly combination. After the rubbing, you could then color the remaining portion and feel like a real artist.

Another creative Halloween monster toy from the past is the Colorforms Castle Dracuala Fun house.

This was a fun colorforms set. What made this one unique for me was that you could open the doors and caskets. That way you could place the monster behind the secret door. If you are not familiar with Colorforms, they are basically scenes and sticker sheets of characters and items. You put the things in the scene where you want. The beauty of Colorforms is that the items stick to the scene but not to anything else and you can remove them and place them somewhere else in the scene as many times as you want.

I will do another post about Colorforms later so I can show them to you in detail. As for the Castle Dracula Fun House set, all I have left is the box. If you want to see this monster set in detail though, Tracy has a great post about it at Tracy's Toys.

The best creative Halloween and monster toys today are from Lego. At their Official LEGO Online Shop they have little Halloween items that you can buy and build like these:

These little items are very inexpensive but they ARE very small. Still small, but bigger (and probably better) than these are the Halloween and monster Lego Mini Figures.

I really like the new Lego Vampire Minifigure and the Lego Witch Minifigure.

There are also great monster minifigures that are available by themselves, but originally came with sets. As a complete toy, the sets are even better. As an example, here are some cool Lego monster minifigs:

The Skeleton comes with the Prince of Persia Desert Attack Set #7569,
or the Star Wars Hoth Wampa Set #8089 and probably some other sets.

The Egyptian Mummy came from Lego Studios Curse of the Pharaoh set 1383 or the LEGO Adventurers Series #5958 - Mummy's Tomb.

The very cool Skeleton Reaper and Horse comes with one of the Lego Castle Series sets. The Lego Castle Series was the first and longest running series of sets and minifigures. The early legoland castle sets actually qualify as vintage since they began in 1978. Castle sets have continued to evolve each year ever since. Maybe vintage Legos will be the next post. This post is about creative Halloween toys.

Lego monsters, Dracula Colorforms and Mighty Men and Monster Maker are all different Halloween/Monster sets but all very creative in their own way. Whether vintage or modern, old or new, creativity always makes for better play.

Now that its almost Halloween, I hope everyone who plans on dressing up for parties or trick-or-treat will also be creative.
